Red Dot Design Award Winner: LiuGong's T-Series

The Red Dot Award is one of the world's most sought-after marks of high design quality. For LiuGong, this award represents the culmination of over a decade of dedication to in-house industrial design, pushing the boundaries of what a wheel loader can be.  

Let’s take a look under the hood at what makes the award-winning T-Series a complete game-changer for Kiwi operators.

The Evolution: Listening to the Operator

LiuGong's design journey took a massive leap in 2011 with the launch of the H-Series, which established the brand's core design DNA. By 2020, LiuGong set out to design the "next generation" of machines—originally designated the J-Series, now known globally as the T-Series.  

Instead of just updating aesthetics, LiuGong started by addressing real-world feedback from five years of H-Series operations. Operators wanted more room, better visibility, and a less fatiguing work environment.  

Inside the Award-Winning Cab: A Premium Worksite Office

The new T-Series cab was re-engineered from the ground up to maximise operator interface and external visibility:  

• More Space, More Light: The cab features a significantly larger glazed area, flooding the interior with light and greatly opening up operator sight lines.  
• Smart Climate Control: To combat the heat that comes with more glass, LiuGong incorporated advanced glass tinting alongside a thermo-reflective silver roof moulding covering the integral Falling Object Protection (FOPS) guard.  
• Enhanced Ergonomics: With a light grey palette that amplifies the feeling of spaciousness, a premium quality seat, and intuitive instrumentation layout, driver fatigue is dramatically reduced.  

Exterior Power: Inspired by the Charging Bull

Once the cab enclosure was perfected, the industrial design team shifted focus to the exterior, starting with the global sales "sweet spot"—the 856T.  

The team wanted to make a bold, assertive visual statement. The result? A strong, confident stance that channels the raw power and urgency of a charging bull. The machine features a striking profile that naturally directs the eye forward to the tool face, making the loader look like it is leaning into the job and working hard—even when it's completely at rest.  

Built for Safety & Serviceability

A beautiful design means nothing if it doesn't perform on a rugged job site. The T-Series integrates several practical user-centric features:

1. Unrivalled Visibility: Alongside a standard rear-view camera, the rear counterweight includes uniquely designed raised "tusks". These define the rear extremities of the machine visually from the seat while safely housing and protecting the light clusters.  
2. Safe Operator Access: Entry features generous high-grip platforms and large 32mm-diameter grab rails painted in high-visibility orange. This specific size was customer-tested to subliminally communicate strength and safety.  
3. Effortless Maintenance: Daily checks shouldn't be a chore. The global T-Series platform boasts a one-piece rear tipping hood design for unmatched service access, paired with rear-opening doors so refuelling and routine checks can be carried out smoothly from ground level.  

A Complete, Cohesive Machine Family

What started with the 856T has now expanded across the entire weight spectrum. By optimiing components like rear hood assemblies to work across multiple platforms (such as shared hoods between the 838T/842T/848T and the 856T/870T), LiuGong has built a highly efficient, cohesive machine family.  

This signature design DNA is already moving into heavier mining sector platforms and will continue to shape the entire LiuGong catalogue moving forward.
